Salone del Mobile 2020 Has Been Cancelled

The 2020 edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano has been cancelled. The event will now take place from 13th to 18th April 2021. The decision to postpone was made by the Board of the Salone del Mobile because of the ongoing corona virus pandemic that is spreading to almost every country in the world.

“Now it will take place in 2021, just like the Olympics, the European football championships and numerous other events,” the publication wrote.

Before the announcement of the cancellation, the event supposed to be held on June 16thto 21st2020. Based on the current unprecedented circumstances of the novel COVID-19 virus, board members said that “medium-term uncertainties” made it impossible for the event to take place in June.

However, they noted that the 2021 edition—which marks the Salone’s 60th anniversary—will be bigger than ever for the design industry. For the first time ever, all the biennial exhibitions will be held in conjunction with the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Workplace3.0, S.Project and SaloneSatellite, as they expalained in the press release.

Italian authorities said on Sunday (Mar 29) they would extend a month-long lockdown to stem the coronavirus pandemic, as the number of deaths in the country reached 10,779 and the number of infected neared 100.000 cases.

Schools and universities were the first places to be shut down, closing their doors nationwide on March 5. Education Minister Lucia Azzolina said on Friday that the current date for the order to be lifted, April 3, would have to be extended. Italian media also have reported that the extension could last for a further two weeks until about April 18.
